Help with Ottofill
Short answers for the situations people run into most. If yours is not here, email elroymx@gmail.com.
- Getting started
- After an update
- Dropdowns and checkboxes
- Undo
- The icon badge
- Backup, import and delete
- Moving between installs
- Reporting a problem
Getting started
- Pin Ottofill to the Chrome toolbar so the popup and badge are easy to reach.
- Open a Luma event page and fill in the registration questions as you normally would.
- When Ottofill recognises supported questions with answers in them, choose Save answers. Tick what you want to keep and confirm.
- On your next Luma form, open the popup. It shows how many empty supported questions it can fill. Choose Autofill.
- Read the form over. Green means a saved fact was filled. Amber means an answer you should check for this event. Then register yourself.
Ottofill fills only empty fields and never presses register or touches terms and consent boxes. Event-specific questions such as “Why do you want to attend?” are filled only if you saved a custom answer for that exact question.
After an update or reload
When the extension updates while a Luma tab is open, the in-page controls on that tab stop working and show a short notice. This is expected.
- Copy any answers you typed but have not saved yet. Ottofill does not reload the page or clear the form for you.
- Refresh the Luma tab, then reopen the registration form.
- Open the popup again. Your saved answers are still there.
Keep the existing extension installed. Removing and reinstalling it deletes its local storage, including your saved answers.
Dropdowns and checkboxes
Ottofill supports native single-select menus, labelled radio and checkbox groups, and the Luma dropdown and chip-style multi-select widgets it has been tested against. Anything else stays manual.
- Close open menus before choosing Save, Autofill or Refresh. Ottofill checks a dropdown's real options only when you ask it to, and skips a menu you are actively searching in.
- Existing selections are kept. Ottofill never replaces a choice you already made.
- Checkbox suggestions come with a reason. Uncertain ones start unticked. Choose Apply to accept them. Applying a suggestion does not save it as a preference.
- Terms, consent and standalone checkboxes are never filled or saved.
- Native multi-select lists (hold-to-select boxes) are not supported.
If the popup says a control could not be verified, close any open dropdown and choose Refresh. If it still cannot be verified, fill that question by hand.
Undo
After an autofill, Undo restores the fields Ottofill wrote, as long as the inserted value is still there. Fields you edited afterwards are left alone.
- Text fields, text areas, native select menus and checkbox selections that Ottofill added can be undone.
- Radio buttons and custom single-select menus cannot be cleared reliably, so Ottofill reports them as manual. Change them on the form yourself.
- Undo history is kept in memory only. Leaving or reloading the page clears it.
The icon badge
The number on the Chrome icon is how many empty supported questions on the current form are ready to fill. It is not how many answers you have saved.
- A checkbox group counts as one question.
- Questions that already have a value, and suggestions you have not confirmed, are not counted.
- Custom dropdowns are counted only after their options have been checked from the popup. Background scans never open menus.
Backup, import and delete
Open the popup and choose Settings.
- Export downloads your saved answers as a JSON file. The file contains your answers in plain text, so store it somewhere private.
- Import reads a JSON file you pick, checks it, and asks before replacing your current answers. A file that fails the check leaves your answers unchanged.
- Delete all removes every saved answer after a confirmation.
- To change or remove a single answer, use the Saved answers tab. Search, open the row, edit or delete it.
Everything here happens on your computer. Nothing is uploaded. See the privacy policy for the full details.
Moving between installs
Chrome keeps each extension's storage separately. Updating an installed copy keeps your answers. Installing a different copy, for example moving from an unpacked developer build to a Store install, starts with an empty library.
- In the old copy, open Settings and choose Export.
- Install the new copy, open Settings and choose Import. Pick the exported file and confirm.
- Check the Saved answers tab in the new copy before removing the old one.
Reporting a problem
Email elroymx@gmail.com. The most useful details are:
- The Ottofill version, shown on the Chrome extensions page at
chrome://extensions. - What the question looked like and what kind of control it was: text, dropdown, checkboxes, and so on.
- What you expected and what happened instead.
Please do not send personal answers, contact details, secrets or a full profile export. They are not needed to look into a problem.
